Proven Neurological Expertise

The same expertise that makes Methodist Rehabilitation Center the best place to recover from a stroke, brain or spinal cord injury also makes MRC a first choice for those seeking treatment for a variety of neurological diseases and disorders.

Our NeuroRehabilitation Program helps patients – from teenagers to adults – overcome the disabling symptoms of a variety of neurological disorders, including multiple sclerosis, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Parkinson’s disease and Guillain-Barre’ Syndrome.

Our specialists have extensive experience addressing the physical, cognitive and emotional issues associated with these common neurological conditions. And our goal is to help every patient maximize their abilities and maintain their independence.

Services are available through inpatient hospital stays, and follow-up treatment can be scheduled through our outpatient medical clinic and community-based therapy programs.

Methodist also plays a lead role in neuroscience rehabilitation research—a definite advantage for our patients who often participate in scientific studies. The knowledge gained from that research is quickly applied to patient care.

That’s our model for driving innovation and excellence in our clinical programs, and you will not find a similar model for rehabilitation at any other hospital in Mississippi, and only at a few rehabilitation programs in the country.

The NeuroRehabilitation Team at Methodist Rehab is led by a physiatrist – a physician who specializes in physical medicine and rehabilitation and may also have further sub-specialty training in a specific area of rehabilitation medicine.

Our Team

The team includes certified rehabilitation nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, respiratory therapists, therapeutic recreation specialists, vocational rehabilitation counselors, case managers, dieticians, neuropsychologists and biomedical/rehabilitation engineers. Communication is maintained, as needed, with the patient’s referring physician and, when necessary, other medical specialists are consulted.

Through regularly scheduled meetings and frequent interaction, the team works together to improve each patient’s strength, balance, mobility, speech, swallowing and other abilities affected by the neurological disorder. The goal is to optimize the patient’s physical and cognitive abilities and to teach strategies and prescribe assistive equipment to compensate for any deficits.

Our Program

The NeuroRehabilitation program at Methodist Rehab brings together medically accepted therapies, as well as newly recognized innovative treatments, to help patients achieve the highest level of recovery possible.

Patients benefit from a comprehensive treatment schedule that typically includes occupational, physical, speech, respiratory and recreational therapy, as well as educational sessions with the nursing staff.

Family members are always welcome to be a part of the process and group support and educational opportunities are frequently offered to patients and caregivers alike.

Methodist Rehab also stays on the cutting edge of rehabilitation medicine and makes available a number of pioneering treatments.

Our nationally recognized spasticity management program helps patients gain relief from this often crippling condition through advanced medications and therapeutic intervention.

Through videoflouroscopy and electrical stimulation, we help diagnose and treat swallowing disorders. Our body-weight supporting treadmill system improves walking performance, and motor function can also be strengthened by constraint-induced therapy, mirror-box therapy and Interactive Metronome Training.

We also use devices such as SaeboFlex, Bioness and Walk-Aide to promote the return of motor skills. Visual impairments can be addressed through the Dynavision system and people with voice and speech disorders can benefit from Lee Silverman Voice Training and the latest augmentative communication devices. We also employ the use of Functional Electrical Stimulation bicycles and virtual reality and gaming devices such as the Nintendo Wii.

Methodist Rehab also is home to an adaptive computing lab and advanced wheelchair seating clinic – both of which offer patients the latest assistive technology breakthroughs.

Most recently, we became the only hospital in a 300-mile radius to offer therapy through the ArmeoSpring device system. The computer-based technology helps restore arm function in people affected by stroke or brain injury and is being used for patient care and research at Methodist Rehab.

Numerous news releases and feature stories have been written about patients with neurological diseases or disorders who’ve had successful outcomes or made significant gains following treatment at Methodist Rehabilitation Center.
