MADISON, Miss.—A Madison church is offering a free CPR class and chicken plate fund-raising event this Saturday to benefit a member who recently had a liver transplant.
Lisa Winstead of Madison is recovering in New Orleans after undergoing surgery last Sunday. Ellen Lee of Maidson said her sister is doing well and is expected to return home in early to mid-December. Lee, director of the spinal cord injury program at Methodist Rehabilitation Center in Jackson, said the community support has been tremendous.
Last week, Boy Scout Troop 401, sponsored by Methodist Rehab, sold more than $700 in tickets for the chicken dinner.
“This is what scouting is about. We stress to our young men how important it is to be there for our neighbors. Our motto is: ‘Do a good turn for a neighbor,’” Scout Master Betty Dorsey-Wilson said of the troop’s efforts.
“CPR for Friends and Family” will be offered at Ridgecrest Baptist Church’s recreational facility on Saturday, Nov. 15 at 10 a.m., noon and 2 p.m. The free class is approved by the American Heart Association. The Mississippi Organ Recovery Agency will also provide information on organ and tissue donation. An estimated 730 people in Mississippi are waiting for an organ transplant. Winstead was on the list for more than three years.
Tickets for the dinner are $6 each and all proceeds will help cover Winstead’s expenses related to the transplant. Dinners can be picked up at the church from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday.
Donations can be made to the Lisa Winstead Transplant Fund at any Amsouth Bank location. For more information, contact Ellen Lee at 853-2662 or Mae Hardy at 856-6380.
